Trek lengths, sightseeing days, and how to build the right itinerary for your time and budget.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, trip length in Bhutan is a real budget decision, not just a scheduling one. Here's how to think about it โ from a long weekend hike to a full month in the mountains.
| Trek | Trek days | Best paired with |
|---|---|---|
| Chele La Trek | 3 | A short trip focused on Paro & Thimphu |
| Soi Yaksa Trek | 4 | 1 week total with light sightseeing |
| Dagala Trek | 5 | 10-day trip with Thimphu & Punakha |
| Nub Tshonapata Trek | 5 | 10-day trip through central Bhutan |
| Druk Path Trek | 6 | 10-11 day classic western Bhutan trip |
| Merak & Sakteng Trek | 7 | 12-day trip including eastern Bhutan travel |
| Laya Gasa Trek | 12 | 2-week dedicated trekking trip |
| Jumolhari Trek | 13 | 2-week dedicated trekking trip |
| Snowman Trek | 28 | 4-5 week dedicated expedition |
Total trip length = trek days + sightseeing days + arrival/departure buffer.
Example: A 6-day Druk Path Trek + 3 days sightseeing (Paro, Thimphu, Punakha) + 1-2 day flight buffer = a realistic 10-11 day trip.
If you have a week or less, the Chele La Trek (3 days) or Soi Yaksa Trek (4 days) let you experience genuine high-altitude trekking without needing the two weeks a major route demands. Both start and end near Paro, minimising internal travel time.
This is the sweet spot for Bhutan's signature routes โ the Jumolhari Trek or Laya Gasa Trek โ with enough time left over for a few days of cultural sightseeing before or after. For dedicated trekkers with a full month, the Snowman Trek is the ultimate objective.
Since the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night in-country, trip length directly affects your total cost. See our cost breakdown guide for the current rate and how to budget accurately for your dates.
