How Much Does It Cost to Trek in Bhutan?

Understanding the Sustainable Development Fee, what a trek package includes, and how to budget for your Himalayan adventure.

Bhutan follows a "High Value, Low Volume" tourism policy, so it is not a budget backpacking destination. Your total cost has two main parts: the government's Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), and your trek package covering guides, staff, camping, food, and logistics. Here's exactly how it breaks down.

1. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Every international visitor pays a daily Sustainable Development Fee set by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The SDF is a levy — separate from your tour cost — that funds free healthcare and education, conservation, carbon-offset programmes, and the upkeep of trails and cultural sites. It is a cornerstone of how Bhutan stays pristine and carbon-negative.

Following a 2023 reform, the SDF for most international tourists is currently USD 100 per person, per night (reduced from the earlier USD 200). Different rates apply to Indian nationals, and children often receive discounts or exemptions.

⚠️ Important: The SDF is government-set and can change. Always confirm the current rate when you book — we'll give you the exact, up-to-date figure for your travel dates.

2. What a Trek Package Includes

On top of the SDF, your trek package covers everything you need on the ground. With Trek Bhutan, a typical all-inclusive package covers:

Trek chef, kitchen & camp staff✓ Included
All camping equipment (tents, dining, kitchen)✓ Included

3. What Drives the Total Price

Two trekkers on two different routes can pay very different totals. The biggest factors are:

  • Trek length: Because the SDF is charged per night, a 28-day Snowman Trek carries far more SDF than a 3-day Chele La Trek.
  • Group size: Shared staff and logistics cost less per person in a larger group; solo and private departures cost more.
  • Season: Peak autumn dates are in higher demand than shoulder periods.
  • Remoteness: Deep wilderness routes need more horses, staff, and supply days.

4. How to Budget

As a planning rule of thumb, budget for three buckets:

  • SDF — number of nights × current daily rate.
  • Trek package — our per-person quote based on route, dates, and group size.
  • Your own costs — international flights, insurance, personal gear, and tips.

Because every itinerary is bespoke, the most reliable way to get a real number is to request a quote. Tell us your route and dates and we'll send a full, itemised breakdown with no hidden fees.
